From Soil to Sculpture: Ceramics, Creativity & Connection
In a world where disconnection is at the root of many challenges, this project seeks to rebuild a sense of place, creativity, and belonging through the ancient and tactile medium of ceramics. When people lose connection to the soil beneath their feet, it becomes harder to understand their role in the world. We are asking people to change how they are living to safeguard the planet for future generations, but we are skipping the vital step of helping them connect to where they are.
This project is a response to that. Through wild clay foraging, community workshops, and an exploration of Westmeath’s ceramic heritage, it deepens the relationship between people, land, and creativity. It invites those who don’t traditionally see themselves as “artists” to engage with a medium that is both grounding and expressive—proving that creativity is for everyone.
Unlike painting or sculpture, clay is immediate, intuitive, and accessible. Simply putting hands in clay is enough to create something. Clay carries the history of the land, holding stories of the places it comes from. Working with clay is both a creative act and a grounding experience.
Creativity is not confined to traditional artistic talent. It’s in how we plate food, plan journeys, or build communities. Yet many have been made to believe that if they can’t draw, they aren’t “creative.” This misconception holds people back from artistic expression. Ceramics offers a way back in.
