From the Shannon Wetlands to Hasting’s Cottage

From the Shannon Wetlands to Hasting’s Cottage- A Journey of Natural Heritage & Local History will bring together area of natural heritage-the wetlands and a local history site-Hasting’s Cottage in a project that will see children of 4th, 5th and 6th class working wtih local artists and heritage experts to create a deeper understanding of ecology and history through art.

The Shannon Wetland Restoration Project saw the development of the wetlands including the creation of a pond, an outdoor nature classroom and a footpath that encircles and snakes through the vegetation.Hastings Farmhouse is best remembered as one of the ‘safe-houses’ where General Lucas was held during the War of Independence and dates back to 1840.

Children from Gaelscoil Donncha Rua will walk from the wetlands to Hastings Cottage, taking notes, discussing, collecting natural items and sketching as they go.  They will explore the flora and fauna, learn about the history of the cottage and express their experience through various different forms of art. Children will attend a talk about the history of the cottage and the artwork they create will be exhibited in the local library.

The project will be documented by filmographer Olive Carey with The National Museum of Ireland and the film will be added to the Dúchas na Sionna website.
