Gardening Club at Strokestown Park- Education, Training & Seed Bank Development
The volunteer garden team will learn and develop their knowledge and skills for gardening. We want to make it about more than just gardening. They will learn the significance of, and skills to develop a seed bank, based on the plants that are already growing in the gardens and parklands, to diversify what we grow here and to share seeds with other gardens and parklands. We see this as an opportunity to engage with other organic and historic gardens and parklands, ensuring access to wild meadow seeds , flowering plants and organic vegetables continues.
The front meadows at Strokestown Park House have never been reseeded or artificially fertilised and are diverse in heritage grasses and wildflowers. The meadow is only cut once a year meaning the sward is healthy and diverse. The heritage seeds available would benefit any other meadow to ensure robust and resilient growth.
