Gaw-yas Grannie (Traveller Children's Identity)

Children whom attend Shannonside Community Childcare Centre are working with artist Kate Murtagh Sheridan on a project that is centred around Traveller Children's Identity in close collaboration with the National Museum of Country Life in Castlebar.

The project will begin with a trip to the Museum. They will be given a tour and meet with staff member Oein DeBhairduin who is an Irish Traveller, Traveller activist, educator, administrator, and published writer

They will get the opportunity to respond to particular objects in the museum when they visit, some being part of the current Traveller specific area and others that are not specific to the Travelling Community.

The trip will strike up conversations with children, parents/guardians and staff about family culture and history leading to discussions about identity and belonging and how being a Traveller is an important part of our society and locality.

Extracts of conversations will be recorded at the museum and return journey after.

Individual and group discussions will open the doors to inspire and ignite the project.  A story will evolve, following the child’s interests and thought processes that are connected to them as individuals and their culture within the Travelling Community.
