Geashill Tidy Towns has been exploring the history of the village through the lens of 50 or so objects, ideas or events which are emblematic of what Geashill is today. Our inspiration from The Geashill Cauldron which resides in the National Museum. It is the largest brewing pan discovered in Ireland measuring 112cm in diameter and 35cm deep and made from beaten copper alloy and made its first appearance in an account of a battle in the Annals of the Four Masters. 400 years later in 1859 the Cauldron was discovered in a nearby bog and stored in Geashill Castle until 1922 when fearing that it was about to be relocated to England, 3 local IRA men took the Cauldron from the castle to a place of safe-keeping. It reappeared again in 1953 when it was displayed in the vocational school in Tullamore before it was finally handed over to the National Museum. There is a shared interest in our community in commemorating the Cauldron but also in allowing the community to reconnect with the story. We will work with local artists, Ciaran Byrne and Luke Carson to produce designs for a sculptural piece inspired by the spirit of the Cauldron.
