Gortnacrannagh Conference

The Gortnacrannagh idol is a substantial late-Iron Age oak sculpture discovered during archaeological excavations in advance of the N5 realignment works north of Tulsk in 2021. This fascinating object, its recovery and care, its former setting and context, its significance, and what it can tell us about life in mid-Roscommon nearly two thousand years ago is the subject of a one-day conference, where international experts in Irish archaeology and wetland archaeology will share their findings on this enigmatic artefact of our past.

The event will also host an artistic photographic exhibition of many of the people behind these investigations, captured and displayed by John Channing, and will conclude with the launch of the specially-crafted Gortnacrannagh idol replica, which is housed at the event venue, Rathcroghan Visitor Centre in Tulsk, Co. Roscommon.
