Humour & Art
The exhibition will feature a mix of Irish and international artists known for their humorous approaches. Neven Lahart, Vera Klute, Laura Angell and Terry Markey have all confirmed their participation. Local artists will also be invited to showcase how humour is embedded in regional storytelling and artistic expression throughout the exhibition. (For example, Terry Markey has created a video piece for the exhibition with the input of local comedians.)
Laura Angell draws from her experiences with social media and the gulf between the online self and offline reality. Her sculptures take inspiration from porcelain ornaments she sees in others' homes and conversations about social media.
Vera Klute’s work demonstrates the absurd in the everyday. Her taxidermied birds are posed as if in their last moments, with comical word balloons in acrylic, emphasising the moment of impact.
Terry Markey is investigating the construction of comedy and the art of telling a joke in his video work for the exhibition. He has collaborated with a group of local comedians by using a joke as a framework to explore multiple approaches to the art form and the diversity within.
Neven Lahart, as a painter, uses humour in a profoundly subversive manner, often tackling subjects of a political and social nature.
