Kilkenny Traditional Shopfronts Project

In The Shopfronts of Ireland, Sean Rothery holds that it is through the art of hand-painted lettering that traditional shopfronts make their most individual and vital contribution to the Irish streetscape. Thus this project aims to catalogue, categorise and analyse the signage on the historic shopfronts of Kilkenny City to establish a typology that may inform future conservation projects.

Initial research has identified a pattern within council shopfront guidelines of modest advice for shopfront lettering. This audit will focus on the fascia lettering that may extend to ancillary letterforms within the exemplar. The study may reveal a Kilkenny archetype and potentially establish findings to aid in the preservation of signage on Kilkenny’s historic shopfronts.

The audit will culminate in a searchable, indexed datasheet with an accompanying findings report. These findings may ultimately support new signage projects to offer a more sympathetic approach to compliment this heritage-rich city.
