Lowering the Tone

The project will fund a series of workshops for children facilitated by experienced double bass and viola teachers that will inspire them to pursue further learning on the instruments, which will be provided for participants. The workshops will help identify potential double bass and viola players to join the Oriel Traditional Orchestra to perform arrangements of Irish traditional music including a new suite, ‘The Oriel March’ commissioned by the Oriel Traditional Orchestra with funding from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, which will be premiered in Spring 2019.

These workshops will utilise these new instruments to help enable the creative potential of every child by opening up opportunities as bass players with the regions’ leading traditional music ensemble. The instruments ensure accessibility for members of the community who may not have access to such expensive instruments. These introductory workshops link in with the strong tradition of string playing in Co. Louth. The workshops will also support plans to perform new works by Louth-based composers.
