Making MAC: Celebrating Creativity in Older Age 2021 - Exploring Kildare County Council’s Municipal Collection.

Making MAC is a welcome and inclusive space for viewing and discussing art. It supports positive ageing groups in communities in Kildare to explore, discuss and question artworks from the Kildare County Council Municipal Art Collection, through gentle, but structured conversation.

This takes place in small groups (maximum of 10 participants) facilitated by artist Vera McEvoy. Vera was nominated by Kildare County Council to participate on the 2020 training in dementia-inclusive visual arts programming (Azure) led by Age and Opportunity, supported by the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Butler Gallery and the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The Making MAC session format encourages the participants to discuss what they can see in terms of colour, brush strokes, line, shape and what thoughts or words the work evokes, it is not about art knowledge. However, individuals can improve their creative knowledge and experience, as renewed confidence and trust develops. No previous art awareness is necessary for participation.

It was planned to provide once weekly art discussion sessions in day care centres, nursing homes, libraries etc. Due to Covid restrictions, Day care centres and libraries have not been available to host these sessions in house. Phase 1 was online in a number of Nursing homes and is now complete. Phase II commenced in the end of September and is available to the public as well as nursing homes.
