Modern Day Mummers
During the lockdowns in Ireland in 2020 and 2021 the traditions of mummers, biddies and wrans was revisited and brought to the homes of elderly or vulnerable people across Leitrim. The idea was quickly picked up on in Co. Kerry and musicians, singers and dancers donned their straw costumes and disguises and brought music, song, dance and stories to the door steps of the older generation across Co. Kerry.
Working closely with the knowledge of the local community, home help staff, public health nurse & active age groups in each area a list of people is drawn up that will be visited on a specific day that the mummers are out. The mummers perform for 20 mins on the doorstep of each home. The musicians are always local to the area and so are usually familiar with the area and person they are calling to. The locations are:
Ballinskelligs – May 2021
Portmagee – May 2021

Killorglin – December 2021
