Monkland community choir draws participants from a number of local organisations including:
St Hilda's Athlone voluntary services who provide comprehensive quality services to people with mild, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities, local mental health service users and providers, local nursing homes, Rehab services, active retirement groups and some members of the local community.
The choir meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month, providing a social outlet in a safe and welcoming community setting for its more than 30 members. The choir has operated up until this point on the back of local volunteer support. An approved request for Creative Ireland funding would support the choir to obtain the expertise of a qualified music instructor who holds an M>A in Community Music. Through the expertise of this identified instructor, it is hoped the choir will obtain support necessary to allow the group to participate in some local events during Christmas 2019. The Monksland area is home to one of the most diverse populations in the county of Roscommon. The choir has successfully engaged with individuals in the local community who have in the past encountered barriers to participation in cultural, sporting or other community activities. Its continued success is a vital thread in the fabric of this new emerging community.
