The Sisters of Mount Carmel in New Ross successfully created an industry for the sole employment of local girls in 1822. The New Ross lace was supplied for papal coronation robes, to the British Royal Family and to the Empress Elizabeth of Austria.
The aim of this project is to produce a catalogue and hold a public event of the Mount Carmel lace collection for everyone to enjoy. This facilitates local awareness about previous inhabitants and the highly skilled craft they produced that became known worldwide.
The catalogue will be launched in a suitable public venue in New Ross where lace items from the collection will be showcased as part of a public day. This will include talks on lace and crochet plus involve demonstrations and workshops in the art of lace making.
Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
