Mount Juliet Memories – the scrapbooks of Lady Rose McAlmont
The Initiative proposes to digitise the scrapbooks that were composed by Lady Rose McAlmont dating from circa 1909 to the late 1930’s which contain not just a family archive, but general Irish History, topics include, the First world War, 1916 Rebellion, The War of Independence and the Civil War. It covers the family’s involvement in Imperial service in East Africa during the First World War. Big House culture is covered by the family’s involvement with horses and the running of the Estate and the employment and livelihoods it generated and supported. The assets consist of letters, newspaper clippings, photograph and telegrams.
This was a period of great change in Ireland and also internationally and the scrapbooks illustrate this. At the same time the continuity of the culture and life of the Big House also strongly features. Thus, the contrasting themes of continuity and change, a feature of modern life also feature here in a highly visual manner.
