Ogham Alphabet Garden: Rathcroghan

Following the success of the 2023 event, the Rathcroghan
Visitor Centre & Farming Rathcroghan Project are building a concept garden for the Postcard
Garden section of the Bord Bia Bloom, taking place in the Phoenix Park, Dublin between 30th
May-3rd June The working title of the garden is the Ogham Alphabet Garden. The concept has been inspired by the presence of an ogham inscription at the entrance to the cave at Oweynagat in the historic Rathcroghan landscape. Ogham stones are among Ireland's most remarkable treasures, which bear inscriptions in the unique Irish Ogham Alphabet that used a system of notches and horizontal or diagonal lines, scores to represent the sounds of an early form of Irish language and can be dated to between the fourth and eight century AD. The ogham inscription at the entrance to Oweynagat, which was deliberately recycled in the construction of the souterrain is recorded as VRAICCIMAQIMEDVVI, and is ordinarily translated as (the stone) of Fraoch, son of Medb, the legendary Queen Maeve, who held her royal palace located at the Rathcroghan Mound and the Maeve of the the great epic Tain Bó Cuailnge, which started in Rathcroghan.
