Old School in the modern world

Scoil Ursula has been working with the Creative Schools Cluster for the past year under a project entitled ‘Old school in the modern world’. The idea behind the project was to give children another outlet besides screens so they would be able to have a skill to ‘unwind’ with, such as knitting, drawing, weaving, crochet and other old school crafts.
As we are seeing our 1st year being so successful- with craftspeople such as Ana Faye completing an upcycling sewing project within our school, Lucy Goodier teaching old school drawing and portraiture,  Alison Hunter doing a lovely project on feltmaking, Wayne O’Conner doing a storytelling session with the younger children to name but a few of the projects taking place in year 1, and with the acknowledgement that digital crafts are also an opportunity for children to have creativity, we would like to explore the idea in year 2 of creativity in the modern world- with scope for working with outlets such as Fab lab in Manorhamilton in creating mobile makerspaces in schools- opening up the creativity we can have through digital means. We have other similar proposals of ideas- such as digital storytelling and photography, which we hope will open children’s eyes up to a whole new world of creativity. The children’s voice has always been an integral part of the Creative Schools initiatives. We asked the children for their input into the types of creativity they would like to experience in school.
