One Million Stars Community Installation by Amber Refuge

10,000 handwoven stars curated in a public installation exhibited during the 16 Days of Activism 2020. (November 25th through the Christmas period).

This exhibition will take place at MacDonagh Junction shopping Centre. The stars are a visual representation of solidarity against all forms of violence with the culmination of a wider community of weavers who kept connected throughout lockdown and Covid restrictions by engaging in a craft. This connection through art is extended outwards within a wider global context.

Located in the public area of MacDonagh Shopping Centre with stars hanging in 6 metre lengths from the vaulted ceiling, the central corridor will house four two by one metre letters made with a precast steel frame and a grid infill. The letters shall stand on the ground spelling the word LOVE covered with stars. This is an interactive piece; members of the public are encouraged to attach their own woven stars. The word LOVE is a reminder that in uncertain times, we are innately connected as humans by both our vulnerability and our strength. As a community we can show support and compassion in adversity. Love and compassion are stronger that hate and violence; love is universal and instills hope and encourages connection.

A virtual opening: An online programme of events shall include a video explaining the star journey in Ireland that will run on social media platforms alongside the event. More information can be found in the event site link.
