Open Call 2022 - Sligo Childrens Community

We wish to continue the artistic engagement with Ruth Le Gear and the children and the women’s group (2/80 years) at the garden through further workshops. Story boxes will be made for the children to engage with the biodiversity on site and stories will be collected from the children through notebooks, as well as video of their process and artistic engagement.

The outcome from this would be a video which would highlight the children’s knowledge of plants and the biodiversity of the special landscape in which we find ourselves. The woods is a special area of conservation and the garden is one they are helping to create. We hope to get bees and join Sligo’s pollinator project and create a pollinator friendly garden as well as a pond. We are really uniquely placed within the landscape of Sligo to deliver such a project. The activities will help the children and the adults engage and connect with nature - helping them learn about and interact with plants, insects and the seasons.

We want to build a space in our garden for the children to create, we have an amazing polytunnel, but our growing space is being taken over with art activities. This new space will be used a holding space for the stories to be told and sharing of activities through the story boxes. This will potentially be a geodome. The story boxes, will include notebooks, pencils, seeds, felt for creating treasure pouches, gnomes to tell the stories from the garden, magnifying glasses and binoculars etc.
