Ourselvesopedia

Over the course of five two-hour sessions with an illustrator and author, primary school children will create a book about themselves. They will look at their lives and their neighbourhood through geography, history and heritage (at individual, family and community levels), to school life, hobbies and sports, food, pets, animals, etc.

As well as using existing maps, iconography and textual documentation, the children will produce their own texts and images through creative writing and illustration activities. Children will try their hands at different styles and genres (poetry, non-fiction, letter writing, anticipation), and will widen the range of sources to tap for inspiration.

The activities will be both individual and collective, allowing each participant to make their mark according to their personal skills and preferences.

Each child will create a book, and some collective pieces over the course of the project. The project will culminate in an exhibition in NCL where the children will display their work. This will be followed by a Big Picture drawing event which would be open to the community in which to participate.
