Painting a Village

Ballyboy, a small village at the foot of the Slieve Blooms in County Offaly, has long been known for its historical significance and its thriving community network. Walking through this village, one progresses from an ancient church, past a thatched pub, a busy Primary school, a motte and bailey towards the Silver River and an old mill. The heart of this village is a tight knit rural community engaged in local industry, farming, the GAA and with a wonderful record of traditional music.

Painting a Village project  led by Ballyboy Community Development Company in collaboration with artists, Esther Lambe and Rosemarie Langtry aims to increase knowledge and respect for the heritage and landscape of the village, develop the artistic expression and participation of the community in the arts and facilitate interaction between members of the community both young and old.

All age groups will come together in August to preparatory art classes, where participants will use various art materials, and flora and fauna available in the immediate environment to represent various aspects of the village. The culmination of Painting a village Project will be a Plein Air Day and exhibition, facilitated by the Ballyboy Development Company, where the community will depict the village in an immediate and creative way thus developing a personal connection with their surroundings.
