Puppet Play

A collaborative puppet-making project with artist Jack Rogers, which will facilitate Droichead Youth Theatre members exploring artistic ideas in a safe, encouraging environment, developing crafting skills, and creating their own unique puppets and characters.

The theatre members will take part in workshops over 14 weeks and will be introduced to new materials and techniques, expanding their range as puppeteers while exploring various materials and structures for the design of puppet characters. Topics explored will include silhouette, breath, imagination and visualisation practice, colour work, paper engineering, cloth design, lighting, perspective and puppetry mechanics.

In the process the participants will also reflect on what is happening in people’s lives right now, and in telling stories that explore themes like escape and freedom, connection/disconnection, isolation and belonging.

The entire process will be built on a foundation of solid youth arts and youth work practice, ensuring the child and their development and creativity is at the centre of all work, and that each participant is supported in being creative, inquisitive and at times a little silly!

Updates on how the project progresses can be found on the Droichead Youth Theatre Facebook page here
