Quarried, Carved and Crafted - Ballinasloe's Limestone Legacy

Quarried, Carved and Crafted - Ballinasloe's Limestone Legacy is an ambitious crosscommunity heritage and arts project that celebrates Ballinasloe’s deep-rooted limestone-working traditions and the people whose skills shaped the town’s built environment.

Developed collaboratively by Ballinasloe & District Heritage Society, Group 8, and the Galway County Council Heritage Office, the project highlights the enduring cultural, architectural, and social significance of Ballinasloe limestone and the generations of stone cutters, masons, quarry workers, and craftspeople whose work is embedded in the fabric of the town.

At its core, the initiative seeks to document the history of local quarries, gather oral histories from families and individuals with connections to stone-working, and explore how Ballinasloe limestone has shaped the town’s architectural and social development. These findings will be interpreted through a suite of engaging and publicly accessible outputs, including an illustrated booklet that blends heritage research with artistic interpretation; a short documentary film capturing the landscapes, stories, and craftsmanship central to the project; and a three- to fourepisode podcast series that features interviews, site visits, and creative reflections.
