Reclaiming the Workhouse

Reclaiming the Workhouse sees artist photographer Brian Cregan celebrate the rich history of Athy Workhouse with a series of creative workshops for Summer and Autumn 2024.

Like many of its kind in Ireland, Athy Workhouse has undergone huge transformations over the years. From an institution that symbolised oppression and despair, to a hospital providing care for locals, the building is important architecturally, socially and in the collective consciousness.

With Brian working alongside local communities, the project hopes to enhance wellbeing through creative participation. A key element will be a series of photography workshops with the local library, schools and community groups. Participants will learn about composition, exposure, lighting and editing techniques. A series of photowalks and visual storytelling ideas will see participants exploring local heritage sites and places of interest.

The artist has previously photographed the Workhouse interior with the support of Kildare County Archives and Local Studies. This hidden history will be revealed and shared through a series of talks and presentations by local people. An exhibition of work by the project's participants, as well as images of the workhouse, is key to the event.
