The Wild Atlantic Shanty Festival is a 3 day International event that will take place in Rosses Point 16, 17, 18 June 2023. Rosses Point is Sligo’s maritime village and has a rich maritime culture, part of which is the singing of sea songs & sea shanties (sailors’ worksongs). Our festival supports the continuance of this tradition with a series of events including concerts, singing sessions, street performances, ‘spoken word’ with maritime themes, workshops, talks & nautical demonstrations; water based events and family and novelty events.The Festival is the longest running shanty festival in Ireland and over the years has engaged with other maritime festivals regarding programme organisation and encouraged the formation of shanty singing groups. In Sligo alone 4 shanty groups were formed arising from involvement with the festival and we continue to seek out ‘home talent’ – we have groups from Waterford, Dublin and Leitrim performing with us this year. The participation of National and International Shanty groups brings a diversity of history, knowledge as a tourist destination.
