Sharing the Oyster: Bridging Generations to Inspire Care of Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems

Sharing the Oyster is an intergenerational dialogue between experienced oyster fishermen and school-aged children from the Clarinbridge area. Older participants, many of whom spent their lives harvesting oysters or living within oyster-dependent economies, will share stories about their traditions, techniques, and the challenges they faced - this will take place in two forms: one through a dedicated artist-farmers gathering and the other across two day sin Clarinbridge NS. These oral histories will give children a vivid picture of life in the villages, traditional methods of oyster management, and the deep connection between communities and the sea. This intergenerational exchange ensures that the wisdom and practices of the past are not lost but instead inspire a new generation to care for the environment and instill a grounded pride of place.

As part of Sharing the Oyster, participants will visit an ancient oyster midden (the archaeological remains of historical shell deposits), with guidance from a professional archaeologist.

A key creative component of Sharing the Oyster is the collaborative creation of a modern-day shell midden using clay. Working under the guidance of a professional artist, Claire McLaughlin, the older and younger participants will together craft individual clay shells carrying a personal wish or message for the health of the environment. These wishes will be inscribed onto the clay, blending creativity with heartfelt intentions for the planet.
