Shop Fronts Project

Kilkenny City’s shopfronts, many of which date back to 1900’s, contribute significantly to the character, visual appeal and cultural heritage of the city. Changes in the retail environment and other factors are leading to changes in, and a loss of, Kilkenny’s traditional shopfronts.

Kilkenny County Council has commissioned an artistic photographic audit of a number of traditional shopfronts in the city and an awareness raising promotion.

The aim of the project is to photograph the aesthetic and design qualities of 30 of Kilkenny’s traditional shopfronts, and to use a selection of the photos to create materials for an awareness raising promotion.

It is intended that the project will be used by Kilkenny County Council to increase public awareness of the visual aesthetic and design features of Kilkenny’s shopfronts and inform a discussion on policies and actions to value and protect them.
