Sligo Field Club - 11th Annual Conference

Christianity was introduced into a pagan Ireland that was rich in its own religious practices, practices that survived and thrived in a Christianised culture of scared places, wells and pilgrimage. The formal Roman church of parishes and a Roman hierarchy was soon replaced by a monastic culture rich in scholarship in which the bishop was subservient if not replaced by the abbot.

This conference and its specialist speakers will develop our understanding of this monastic and parochial culture, its place in Gaelic civil society and specifically its manifestation in the settlements of east Sligo, some cultural and artistic influences at play in the surrounding countryside and the major influence of St.Colmcille and his foundation in Drumcliffe.
