Sligo Summer of Shakespeare
Hawk’s Well Theatre, in collaboration with Cliffoney resident and award-winning actress, filmmaker and educator Monica McCarthy, will produce a groundbreaking “Sligo Summer of Shakespeare” cultural event from June 22nd – June 24th 2024. The project, aligning with the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, will bring Shakespeare’s exploration of summer as a time of love, adventure and magic to the youth and creative communities of Sligo. The theatre and the community it serves are at the heart of this project, with two distinct workshops being held on theatre grounds on Saturday 22nd June and facilitated by Monica McCarthy.
The first workshop, held in the morning, will offer young people an opportunity to decode and engage with Shakespeare’s works in a fun and exciting way, breaking the stories free and separating them from the obligations of homework and exams. We will reach out to local youth groups, such as Sligo Youth Theatre, for their participation. The second workshop will bring together local dramatic and music societies, such as the Sligo Drama Circle, Cliffoney Dramatic Society and Grange Players to select and explore key scenes from Shakespeare’s repertoire. This session will be based on Monica’s popular Decoding Shakespeare workshops (https://www.monicamccarthy.net/foractors), and will offer a detailed exploration that primes participants for a public performance of their chosen scenes.
