Sneem Ogham Tree Trail
Sneem TidyTowns is working with Féilte na Snadhma and Sneem Story House to develop a sculpture in our Ogham Tree Trail. This project aims to create an Ogham Tree Trail to increase awareness and appreciation of the importance of our native trees and their connection with our history.
The Sneem Ogham Tree Trail will consist of sculptures made from found wood and iron, each of which will feature a letter from the Ogham alphabet that corresponds to a particular tree, with the sculptures located next to the relevant trees. The sculptures will also refer to each tree’s consideration under Brehon Law and its mythology and folklore. In 2023, the first sculpture based on the alder tree was created and 2025 will see a new sculpture added to the trail.
Sneem’s interest in the Ogham alphabet, goes back to Bishop Charles Graves who was from there and played a key role in deciphering the Ogham alphabet and preserving and promoting an understanding of the Brehon Laws through the Brehon Law Commission. Under the ancient Brehon Laws, trees played a crucial role as they were classified into different ranks based on their economic, ecological and cultural significance, with strict protections, and fines for their damage and destruction.
