Southend Singers
The Southend Family Resource Centre has worked with a group of retired men and women to develop the Southend Singers project. The project offers older people in the area an opportunity to come together for an informal and fun activity, while raising confidence and self-esteem. Aiming to foster and develop positive perceptions about what being an older member of the community means, the project harnesses the affirmative act of collective singing to build recognition for long lives that have contributed to the community spirit of Taghmon.
Led by local musician Jimi Cullen, the group will not only be creative by singing together, but they will also use small percussion instruments to accompany the songs. Afterwards, tea and coffee will be served over chats, offering the opportunity for further social interactions. The social nature of the sessions will enhance mental health and wellbeing for many of the group, whose community activities and routines were interrupted by Covid and are slow to return.
Every Tuesday between April and June 2024 the singers will meet at the Saint John of God Primary School, Townparks between 6.30 and 7.30. There will be a public performance by the group at the Southend Family Resource Centre Street Festival on Friday 28th June. All people over retirement age are welcome to get involved.
