Stepping Together
Griese Youth Theatre will host a Multicultural event July 13th -15th with a focus on local ethnic groups celebrating diversity through dance and physical movement. The three-day event will have workshops in physical movement, contemporary and Irish set dancing, ethnic foods and music.
'Stepping Together' is an invitation for people to meet and to share and celebrate dance traditions and cultures from around the world.
We will establish links with other ethnic groups in particular in the Athy area using contacts made from the Directors participation in a Certificate in Community Work, Participation and Social inclusion in a Diverse Ireland (Maynooth university and County Kildare Leader Partnership) and contacts from the Creative Places project in Athy. Building on the one-day multicultural event we held in October 2022, which focused on the tradition of storytelling from our respective cultures.
With increasing numbers of young people joining GYT from different cultures, we are interested in finding out more about their traditions. An event for all ages, it offers the opportunity to experience a rich variety of music, to practise a circle, square or line dance or a mashup of all three, and to explore steps and patterns in common as well as styles unknown. And whether the term ‘dance at home’ holds any personal significance or not, this special event is designed to encourage everyone to feel at home in mind, body and spirit and to throw a few shapes of their own design.
