The Elephant in the Room project is a creative and reflective staff initiative that forms part of the wider Pieces of Us project at Waterford City & County Council. It provides an opportunity for staff to explore and represent the experiences, feelings, challenges and shared values that shape our working community. The “elephant” represents the things that may be present but are not always spoken about—such as pressures, worries, change, workload, relationships or difficult conversations. Through creative pieces, staff can give these issues a visible and meaningful form.

The project encourages openness, understanding and connection, while recognising that every member of staff brings their own experiences and perspective. By sharing these “pieces of us,” the project can help create conversations that might otherwise be avoided. Ultimately, Elephant in the Room is about acknowledging what matters, listening to one another and building a stronger, more supportive staff community at Waterford City & County Council.
