The Long Grazing Acre
A two-week musical journey celebrating the enormous contribution Irish Travellers make to Traditional Music
June 22nd to July 5th
Master uilleann pipers, Paddy Keenan and Mickey Dunne, embark on a unique and captivating journey through the picturesque landscapes of Roscommon, Leitrim and Donegal, in a traditional horse-drawn wagon, symbolically following the routes of other famous Traveller musical families, the Reillys, the Dorans and The Dohertys.
In a tribute to their Traveller forefathers, Paddy and Mickey, accompanied by family members and musical friends, will relive the experiences and traditions of Irish Travellers. As the horse-drawn wagon meanders through the scenic routes of the three counties, it offers a glimpse into a world of Travellers and their interaction with local communities, where their arrival was eagerly-anticipated.
Travellers were a very invaluable and welcomed part of rural Ireland for centuries, providing seasonal agricultural labour, bringing news into pre-electric rural areas, teaching and playing music, making and repairing instruments, mending pots, pans and farm utensils in a pre-plastic era. The breath-taking landscapes and historic villages provide the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary journey.
