As part of National Heritage Week, participants are invited to join a walk celebrating the archaeological and ecological heritage of Glenbeigh’s Coomasaharn Basin. Aoibheann Lambe will guide the group to a number of prehistoric rock art sites in an area with the largest concentration of prehistoric rock art in Ireland—many of these sites were first identified and recorded by Aoibheann.

Open-air petroglyphs (rock art) are highly vulnerable, as so few people are aware of their existence. Created some 5,000 years ago, they date from the time of the megaliths, and the carvings share much in common with passage tomb art.

Considering the close relationship between rock art, water sources and natural heritage at risk, Bláthnaid O’Loughlin from the River Basin Management Service will also join the walk to share insights into the River Behy, its Blue Dot catchment area, and its connection to the coastal waters around Rossbeigh.

During the walk, participants will be invited to share songs, poetry and reflections on the waterways that sustain communities, the festival of Lughnasa, and mythology connected to the area, alongside creative responses to the rock art.

Participants will meet at Glenbeigh National School and carpool from there to the start of the walk. Further details will be sent to attendees upon registration.
