The Roaring Twenties with Airc Damhsa
100 years ago Lindy Hop was being danced in Effrinagh Co. Leitrim and was one of the catalysts to the 1935 Dance Hall Act and the famous anti jazz protests help in Mohill. Airc Damsha will explore the music and dance of the 1920s in New York and Leitrim as well as the history of this time and the implications this music and dance had on society.
Dance artists from Cork Swing Dance Club, Nadia Johnson & Tom Shanahan, who were involved in organising The Mooch, a renowned swing dance festival in Cork which has now merged with Ballydehob Jazz Festival have been invited to give a five day workshop in Lindy Hop to the group in Carrick on Shannon.
Like many other things at the club, we want to share our experiences with our local community and aim to share our creations with the younger members of the club and at local events we organise such as the crossroads dance in Effrinagh in the following year.
We aim to progress further with this project if it is successful and the group have ideas they'd like to explore and develop with musicians and visual artists around Leitrim in the 1920s, dance halls, jazz music and bringing an old dance hall to life again.
Workshop available only for members of airc damsha.
