The Turf House & The Bog Café

This project involves two core activities.
- The Turf house
- The Bog Cafe

The Turf House project will involve different members of Friends of Ardee Bog (including artists, archaeologists, conservationists amongst others) and older members of the local community living on Ardee Bog (specifically older men who are farmers and former turf-cutters) working together to recreate and build a turf-house (a type of dwelling that would once have been a common dwelling type for poor families in the not-so-distant past). Utilising turf that has
already been cut and left out on the bog (reaching into a conversation about climate change and the capacity for bogs to store carbon), this project will be an opportunity to recreate the community meithil culture involving the Ardee Bog community coming together for turf cutting, farming and house building and practically exploring this aspect of our recent past and heritage through collaborative making.

The Bog Cafe is a micro arts festival and social space celebrating nature, heritage and community through social activities, community learning and collaborative making. The Bog Cafe will take place over three days in Autumn 2024 and will be a space for collaborative art making and sharing the outcomes of art work produced to date. We will also share the outcomes of work produced by our collaborator Upstate Theatre, specifically work produced as part of our oral
history collaboration.
