The Schools Placenames Project is organised by the Archivist, Oifigeach Gaeilge, Placenames Committee (An Coiste Logainmneacha) and the Arts Office to introduce national school children to their local placemanes and provide an opportunity to research and record local names of places -- fields, coastal features, street names etc. They then record their research and any stories they gather from local people. The students use Survey 123 to upload their information directly onto an online map. An artist/writer works wit hthe class on writing the stories about their placenames.
During the course of their research, the children are encouraged to explore and examine the Irish language provenance of most of our native Irish placenames and suggest Irish language versions of newer, English placenames.
In 2024 to showcase the ongoing work an artist will be commissioned to create a work to celebrate Waterford Placenames.
