For the past number of years, Joanne Rothwell, Archivist & Records Manager and Máire Seo Breathnach, Irish Officer; both at Waterford City and County Council, have rolled out a Placenames project to primary school children all over Waterford.

The schools have researched the names of local places (fields, coastal features, streets etc.), recording what they learned, including stories they gathered from local people.

This year, they will focus on digitising the worksheets they have gathered from schoolchildren over the past nine years. They will digitise all of the worksheets received to date and use this information to develop and populate a Waterford Placenames GIS online Storymap with the placenames and information gathered, which will be accessed through www.waterfordcouncil.ie.

This will allow them to showcase the work done to date and also to create an interactive online platform that schools participating in this project in years to come (from 2021 onwards) will be able to populate themselves with the results of their research.
