Trace the Past

'Trace the Past' is a project developed by Ballitore based artist Angelina Foster. With this project, she hopes to connect the public with local history by visiting local burial grounds to make rubbings from headstones and monuments. She believes that graveyards are deeply connected with our sense of place, and family history, and are a valuable place to connect with the history of an area. One of the goals of this project is to make the public more aware of past characters from their areas and to generate interest in family history.

Aims of project:

  • Through the process of gravestone rubbing, explore burial grounds of Co. Kildare, and reveal stories from our past which connect with our sense of place, heritage and language.
  • To make the public more aware of hidden symbolism, heritage and the stories found in the graveyards of Kildare.
  • Create online and offline work in collaboration with Kildare Library Network as a communication and engagement channel.
From the rubbings taken from the burial grounds, Angelina will create a series of videos to be shared with the public through Kildare Library Service. These presentations are intended to give insights, share stories, locations and resources for the public to visit or investigate further. The rubbings will also be placed on display in the libraries closest to the burial grounds, to encourage visitors to the library to connect with their local culture and history.
