Video Recording on the restoration of a thatched cottage in Thomastown Co. Kildare
Video recording of the restoration and conservation of a traditional thatched cottage in Thomastown Co Kildare. The cottage was purchased in 2017 by returning emigrants who wish to conserve the structure as a family home.
The cottage appears on the 1837 ordnance survey maps. This form of construction was once ubiquitous in Kildare and at the time of the last thatched survey in Kildare in 2007, there were 1,500 nationwide and 40 in Kildare. It is estimated that there are only 30-35 left.
This video will provide a record of the restoration of this building from the purchase through to final works. Skilled traditional crafts people will provide hands on commentary on works taken to conserve and protect this interesting and evocative aspect of Kildare’s built heritage.
