The Women's Centre Women's History Project has since 2012 engaged in gathering and recording local women's history. As part of the International Women's Day festival, a month long women's history exhibition is displayed in Waterford Central Library celebrating women from Waterford through the ages.

The absence of women in history is not unique to Waterford and has been recognised. In 2012 the Women's Centre began to address this gap on a local level. Through history work it became evident that to highlight present inequality, which is sometimes invisible, it is necessary to look back and draw attention to past inequalities and the successes gained.

We will focus on developing a number of aspects:

Photographic / Women's History Exhibition

The Pink Plaque Campaign

Women on Walls

Women's History Walk of Waterford

Bonnet Project

Roses from the Heart

The use of history in this project and community education programmes is a tool for building confidence and empowering women.
