Who By Fire

The intention with this project was to create an interactive learning experience for students and the people of Athy, where they will participate in a re-enactment of a Nazi-occupied town in 1945. Empty businesses were to be assigned to students, who will need to research and create their own shop based in that time setting. In addition to being an incredible learning experience for students, it would also be an opportunity for local history enthusiasts to connect to history in a tangible way. It is also hoped that this project will encourage the residents of Athy to look at their town in a different way and may as a result rekindle a sense of belonging and pride.

The event is based on the play 'Who By Fire', written by John MacKenna. The play tells the story of Anna Borowski, a fictional character based on the real-life stories of Holocaust victims. The production features the music of Leonard Cohen, so is of interest to music fans as well as those interested in history and theatre. Actors will play many people in different parts of the community.

The event was originally scheduled to take place between September 21st and 29th 2020, with the production completed by September 30th. However due to the Covid-19 situation, the event has been delayed and the project remains ongoing. It is expected to take place in 2021.
