Strand 1: Lúminaria: Development of new theatre piece for young audiences: Lúminaria is a work in development for young audiences aged 7+. The performance is being developed under an artist in residency programme led by Backstage Theatre Longford & supported by Roscommon Arts Centre’s Creative Ireland Wings Residency. As part of this collaboration, Roscommon Arts Centre played host to playwright Fionnuala Gygax, Director Maisie Lee and their company of actors and designers for a period of research and development for Lúminaria in our new workshop space. The project also saw primary school children in both Roscommon & Longford contribute to its development as they participated in a series of workshops in storytelling, theatre making & puppetry in March & May, before attending a sharing of the work in both Backstage Theatre & Roscommon Arts Centre in June as part of both venue’s Crinniu na nOg celebrations.

Strand 2: Playmaking: a playwriting programme for children aged 9-12 Through an open call in May 2019 in both Roscommon & Longford, young people aged 9 – 12 were invited to write a short story which they wished to have turned into a play, performed by a professional cast, directed by Maisie Lee, with a professional production team. Successful applicants in both counties are spending two weeks over the summer developing their stories and scripts alongside Maisie, before re-joining the creative team in September to tweek the work for production.
