'Project Síle'

Heartlands Pride Athlone with the support of Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council invited the people of Westmeath to create a Síle na Gig float for Athlone’s first Pride Parade. The project was led by community-based artist Aoife Doolan and went on to achieve national recognition, winning the Arts and Entertainment category at the GALAS LGBTQ+ Awards 2026.

Under the guidance of Athlone/Cushla, Monksland based artist, Aoife Doolan, who works as a project worker with Athlone Family Resource Centre, the project explored heritage and folklore through creative expression. Inspired by the traditional Síle na Gig figure, the group developed a colourful and meaningful float that celebrates Westmeath’s cultural history while embracing diversity, equality and LGBTQ+ pride.

In her acceptance speech at The GALAS, Aoife Doolan said:

“Firstly, I have to take a moment to recognise that this summer we made history, because of Heartlands Pride, Athlone saw its very first Pride parade take to the streets. I’m completely shocked that our little community inclusion project in Athlone made it through the whole way to The GALAS. Project Síle goes down as one of my most favourite community arts inclusion projects and this award doesn’t just belong to me, it belongs to the 15 to 20 or so participants who showed up for workshops every week until Síle was born. The Arts is an incredible tool in giving people a voice, empowering communities and bringing people together and I will continue my work in breaking down barriers to ensure everybody has access and the equal opportunity to be heard “.
