"The Frances Browne Storytellers: Seeing Beyond Sight"

The Frances Browne Storytellers initiative was created to celebrate and amplify the voices of blind and vision-impaired writers across Ireland. Inspired by the life and legacy of Frances Browne, the renowned Stranorlar-born writer known as the "Blind Poetess of Ulster", the project provided participants with an opportunity to develop their creativity, share their experiences and be published in a collection of poetry, fiction, memoir and personal reflections.

While the publication itself is a significant achievement, the true success of the initiative lies in its impact on participants. For many, it offered a first opportunity to see themselves as writers, connect with a community of peers and share their stories with a wider audience. The project nurtured confidence, encouraged self-expression and demonstrated the value of lived experience in shaping Ireland’s cultural landscape.

The quality and ambition of the project have also received national recognition. In 2026, Donegal Library Service was named Island of Ireland Regional and Country Winner of Library of the Year at the British Book Awards for the Frances Browne Storytellers project. The award recognised its innovative approach to accessibility, community engagement and creative participation.
