Creative Climate Action: The Callan Energy Store

An alternative, non-commercial premises for the exchange of big ideas, The Callan Energy Store is one of 15 new projects being funded by Creative Ireland’s Creative Climate Action fund.

Come on in and get re-charged

Where does our energy come from? Who makes it?

And ultimately what (and who) does it cost?

The Callan Energy Store is a playful, interactive space where you are invited to examine our energy consumption, explore the possibilities of your own energy production, and to sign the Callan Climate Accord – a theatrically-binding commitment to make one positive change to your energy usage.

For the month of April, Callan will play host to talks, discussions, workshops and film screenings – all with one goal: to improve the energy efficiency of the town, for the benefit of all.

As far back as 1907 this building was home to ‘The Callan Powerhouse’, a locally-owned electricity generating company that provided the wonders of electricity to a dozen local businesses, and provided public street lighting, long before such things illuminated other rural towns.

The Callan Energy Store aims to recharge the idea of locally-produced and owned electricity generation, and empower citizens to start making the changes we all need to see.

"We want to recharge the idea of locally-produced and owned electricity generation, and empower our citizens to start making the changes we all need to see"

Asylum Productions has long history of community-engaged theatre projects in the town of Callan, from Six by Sundown in 2007 exploring the grounds and history of the Callan Workhouse; to Bridge Street Will Be… in 2015 which reimagined the past, present and future of the town’s main thoroughfare, using the entire street as its stage; to the Irish Theatre Award-winning Big Chapel X in 2019 which took hold of the whole town, in the largest theatre production in the history of the state.

For their next big show they’ll be focusing their energy on… energy! As theatre makers it’s their job to ask imaginative questions, and they’re inviting the townsfolk to do the same.

We all know that big changes are needed on a global level. But what changes can we make on a local level in our daily lives to improve the future of our planet for our children? And our children’s children?

And while you’re visiting this April, why not try out The De-Rustifier?

No, it’s not a specialist beauty treatment. Simply bring along your old rusty tools, large and small and using the magic of electricity, and a bit of elbow grease, Rusty will help you make them shine like new – at no extra charge!

A list of The Callan Energy Store‘s events will be updated on the Creative Ireland website monthly.
