Roscommon Creativity in Older Age

In 2023 Roscommon County Council set out on a journey across the county to engage some of our fantastic cultural venues to host a series of Cultural Companions events as part of funding received through Creativity in Older Age.

Daytime County-wide events for Older Audiences aimed to compliment the new Cultural Companions Initiative introduced by Roscommon Arts Office, Roscommon Arts Centre, Roscommon Volunteer Centre and Roscommon Age Friendly Programme in 2022, together with Age & Opportunity, which strives to provide companionship and support to those who would like to attend Cultural activities but feel that going alone or transport to venues pose barriers to doing so.

Roscommon Arts Centre, King House Boyle, Strokestown Park House & Famine Museum, Trinity Arts Centre Castlerea, Culleen Hall, Kilmurry Hall and Moore Hall hosted a total of 14 varied, exciting and engaging events with audience numbers of almost 1000 in attendance. Almost 30 performers and creatives from Roscommon and neighbouring counties were supported through the scheme as well as bringing life to the 7 venues.

The events themselves covered numerous genres including music, spoken word, photography, dance, rural traditions, drama, literature, heritage and local history in the hope of appealing to greater numbers. Staff and volunteers at the participating venues encouraged socialising and taking time for a cup of tea together as well as enjoying the performances, promoting a sense of community and involvement.
