1922: Nora Barnacle and James Joyce - The Galway Story

An evening of readings, conversation and music highlighting Nora Barnacle, her life in Galway and her role in the Joyce odyssey with Nuala O Connor, author of Nora: A Love Story of Nora Barnacle and James Joyce in conversation with Ray Burke, author of Joyce County, his book about Joyce’s links to Galway, which is being re-issued in 2022 with illustrations by Joe Boske. Nuala’s book, Nora has been chosen by Dublin City Libraries for their One Dublin One Book initiative for 2022 and in collaboration with them, we propose that the event on April 1st in Galway, Nora Barnacle’s home place, will kick-start this month of events.

NORA is very much about Nora's side of the Joyce odyssey; the Joyce County about Joyce and Galway and the collaboration and conversation between Nuala and Ray will, we hope, broaden the audience's relationship with the Joyce family and their Galway connections. The Nora-themed music by the Mannions and Emily Greaney, from the 1921 project, will enhance the evening's celebration of this west-east couple who eloped and had such a fascinating life in Europe. We will also host various book clubs both online and in-person during April in our city Libraries This collaboration with Dublin City Libraries will continue their national collaboration with various cities and Library authorities; collaborated with Clare Libraries when The Country Girls Trilogy was the chosen book in 2019, and in 2016.
