'A Pound of Feathers'

Migration has a central role in the diversity of life on our planet. Small changes and patterns in the movement of thousands of tiny species and wildlife can have dramatic consequences on the survival and extinction of other forms of life. This project 'A Pound of Feathers' by Wild Swans explores aspects of migration and our colonial past, voyages of discovery and flights of exile which occurred from the shores of Rathmullen and Lough Swilly and resulted in Irish migration to Northern Spain.

They draw from the rich tradition of migration history and mythology including exodus and exile since Colmcille’s departure from Ireland in the sixth century to Iona through to the Flight of the Earls and the Wild Geese of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, followed by the great migrations after the Famine in the nineteenth. Three filmed public performances will be held at the Battery Fort Rathmullen Co Donegal on the shores of Lough Swilly and three take place in Spain at Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, a site for endangered species of birds including herons and egrets.

Bernadette Hopkins will manage administration of the project. She has experience of working with Creative Donegal on the management of ‘Forgotten Places’ 2020, and with Donegal County Council on 'A Donegal Framework - Intercultural Art in Action Research Project. The film will be ready to be shown for Culture Night at the Regional Cultural Centre, and exhibited online internationally.
