A Town Reads Susan Langstaff Mitchell - legacy project

This poetry trail for Birr is an Anam Beo legacy project by artists Jackie Lynch and Rosalind Fanning.

In its first phase, ten poems with added images were printed onto large, bespoke panels and were placed in various locations for people to discover around Birr. The new phase of this project includes the addition of QR codes which will enable the user to hear the original voice recording of each reader of the poems. As well as being placed on the panels they will also be available through the Anam Beo and The Birr Famous & Notables of Birr websites and present in local businesses.

This project has involved local townspeople most of whom are in their retirement. Ten local personalities were invited to read each of the ten selected poems by Susan Langstaff Mitchell. The two artists recorded and videoed them and a short film was made with an overview, and the collective readings. The poetry trail has attracted and appealed to townsfolk, new residents and visitors, of multiple generations and backgrounds. With the recent surge in attraction to poetry, the provision of a QR code will make this collection more accessible and reach further audiences, within Ireland and abroad.
